James Selby born in Harrison County, Ohio, December 21, 1814.  His parents, John and Prudence (Poulson) Selby, emigrated from Maryland to Ohio in 1811.  James Selby was married in 1836 to Mary Ann Rogers, who was born March 27, 1816, in Harrison County, Ohio. Their children are John, Milton, Hannah, and William L.G.  Hannah and John reside in Noble county, Ohio; Milton in Iowa, and William in this township. Mr. Selby, like the early disciples, works for a living. His trade is that of a shoemaker.  He has a farm of thirty acres, but lives in Byesville.

Mrs. Jemima Selby, former resident of Cambridge, deid Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alfred Mathews, Chicago, Ill., also a former local resident, according to word received by friends in this city.

 

Mrs. Selby resided in Cambridge until about two years ago.  Surviving are two sons, Bert and Bart Selby; two daughters, Mrs. Mathews and Miss Bea Selby,Chicago, and two sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Green and Mrs. Grace Peters, Cambridge.

 

The body will be brought to Cambridge for burial but the message received by friends did not state what day.

Jemima Harriet Peters was born in the charming little town of Derwent, Ohio, January 2, 1882, and received her early education in the public school of that place.  She was married

to Milton S. Selby, January 26, 1898.  He was born near Byesville, Ohio, August 25, 1873, of English parentage.  He was a coal minter.  On January 15, 1917, she divorced him

for non-support and desertion.  His residence is unknown to the family.  She resides at 912 Silven Cliff, Cambridge, Ohio.  This union was blessed with six children.

BARTLEY SELBY

 

Bartley Selby, 43, former well known resident of Cambridge, died Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at his home in Lancaster following several months' illness.  He underwent an operation last spring and had been bedfast a large part of the time since then.

 

Mr. Selby had been a resident of Lancaster for several years and was an employee of teh Lancaster Lens Glass Co., that city.  Before moving there he was employed at the Cambridge Glass Col, and was well known here as a softball player.

 

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Alfred Ogfala and Mrs. W.E. Christopher, Cleveland, two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Bernice Mathews, Beatrice Selby and Bourke Selby of Chicago.  His grandmother, Mrs. Isabelle Peters, Cambridge, also survives.

 

The body will arrive early Sunday at Scott Funeral home, E. Steubenville Ave., and funeral services will be held there Monday at 2 p.m. with burial in Northwood Cemetery.

Bartley Selby was born near Trail Run, Ohio, and is a glass worker. He was married to Edith Marie McCollum, October 26, 1918, in Covington, Kentucky.  She was born in Cambridge, Ohio, August 31, 1901, of Irish and Scotch parentage.  They were divorced at the term of court, 1923.  They had two children, living in Cambridge, Ohio.

The term "gatherer" was a person who actually "gathered" or obtained "blob" of molten glass on teh end of the "gathering rod" from the melting pot and brought it to the blower or to the press where it was shaped into an actual object.  A gatherer was a trained and experienced worker, since too little or too much molten glass caused problems.
